about

Lure of Tropics aka Frank Minoprio releases his third album Loose Union via his own Loft Records imprint. Featuring a collaboration with London improv scene regular Tom Jackson on clarinet, the record is a collection of mantric droning guitar pieces, layered into immersive and powerful soundscapes.

Opener Solstice Sleep sets the scene with duelling counterpoints between Minoprio and Jackson over a bed of 12 string rhythm, followed by Blank Gathering which sees the two of them play across a locked groove of eastern tinged and heavily reverberant electric guitar. The album crosses from the motorik ecstasy of Garage Carving to the hypnotic loops of Decoy Lake, always compelling and evocative.

A sound world more often explored on the other side of the Atlantic, but delivered here in a more succinct style, fiercer and to the point, with an energy unique to its city of conception. Rhythmic modalities full of feeling ebb and flow, with twelve string acoustic patterns and squealing electric wah figures ascending into infinities.

Minoprio’s background as an abstract painter is in evidence throughout, his ability to conjure a world full of depth, energy and colour reflective of his visual art.

Thurston Moore, the psych folk of Ben Chasny and Jack Rose, Near Eastern psychedelia combined with the melodicism of the jazz explorations of the late 60s and early 70s are all touch points here - above all the ability of the aforementioned musicians to push their guitar playing into transcendent and ecstatic spaces.
